The Demise of Classical Education and Its Devastating Effects

By: Kayley Kenzie

The demise of classical education has created a problem in the minds of our youth today. Connected to this loss of classical education are the ideas, values, and visions of classical Greece and Rome. These are the ideas and values that shaped our nation and Western civilization.

Ironically, these are the ideas that have come under scrutiny in our own universities. Very few people in America know about the origins of the West in ancient Greece.

Knowing these ethical theories and philosophies are vital to understanding and maintaining the freedoms we cherish. Sadly, Americans are moving further and further away from them.

It is important that we remember the Greek wisdom that has helped build our nation.

Many of the Greek philosophies became part of the way our government operates: The constitutional government, freedom of expression, individual rights, civilian control of the military, an open economy, separation of political and religious authority, free scientific inquiry, private property, and open dissent. We need these things now more than ever before in our changing world.

We need to also remember that the Greeks insisted that these freedoms be monitored and controlled by civic responsibility, philanthropy, and an absolute world view.

The Greeks did not believe that life was rosy; instead, they saw it as momentary and tragic. Concepts like this along with self-criticism kept things in check.

The demise of classical education leaves us with a skewed and incomplete way of looking at the world. In its place are lenses which gives us a look at the world that consists of blind allegiance, an adoration of material culture, therapeutics, and moral relativism.

For good or ill, the Greeks gave us the power to change the spiritual and physical universe. They also gave us the tools to control our most animal-like instincts so that we can contribute to the common good.

We have two choices: We can fight the demise of classical education, or we can stand by and hope that our children will struggle through the education Dark Age to bring forth a new Greek era.

If we want our children to thrive and drive off this threatening darkness, we need to find ways to teach our children to be independent thinkers who are thankful to the Greeks for what they modeled for Western civilization.
