Homeschool History - The History of Home School

The idea of homeschooling is straightforward: Home education is a teaching method conducted in the family's home instead of at a public or private school. There was a time when all schooling was done at home; there were no public schools.

Occasionally there were also small community centers for learning. Homeschool history is varied and rich, since it was the first tool of instruction.

If a child received any kind of education, or had private tutors, they were considered to have an advantage. They were usually from wealthy families.

The only method of gaining an education was informally in the home. Normally parents were the main educators, although at times there were local teachers who would help out.

It's no secret that before the public education system was implemented, the United States had already experienced its literacy peak. This is an important fact to remember in homeschool history.

During the 1800s, there were many important changes to the way education and schooling was carried out. One of the main changes was the introduction of mandatory school attendance laws. According to the government, it is a human right that children receive a public education.

There has been a lot of debate over the success of public schools since that time. People have even claimed that the public school system is hurting younger children, especially boys, since they mature more slowly.

Studies have been conducted to study the effects of formal education on children between the ages of eight and twelve.

According to this research, it was found that formal schooling was damaging to children mentally and physically. Sometimes the negativity produced behavioral problems.

These studies were conducted in the 1970s, and according to these tests, tribal mothers in Africa with no literacy were able to bring up their children to be more emotionally and socially advanced than Western children.

It is thought that this advancement was due to the bond that was created between parents and their children. This bond is obviously decreased with formal education.

Parents bank on homeschool history when they pick and choose from a variety of curricula and teaching methods for educating their children. Schooling is done in a secure environment, but children are usually still mandated to pass required tests.

Parents who choose to homeschool their children usually do so to ensure that their children receive a quality education.
