Easy Quilting

By: CedarCityMom

Hello and my name is Jessica Stewart. I'm a self taught quilter. I'm afraid I do not know all of the correct terminology for quilting, but can create some very simple, yet elegant quilts. I’ve always admired everyone else's quilts and said one day I'll teach myself. And, so I did. I kept it very simple, squares. I have found squares (and triangles to make squares) are a beginners (and seasoned) quilter's best friend. I have created every thing from a four block pattern to more elaborate patterns all from squares. I quilt with everything from store bought clothe, to scrapes, old clothes, and jeans (my favorite). I’m a BIG FAN of “patch” style quilting. In this article I’ll give you all the very basics.

Tools I find very helpful:

1. Sewing Machine (mine is a Brothers, a gift from my MIL)
2. Thread (For the initial sewing & for the “quilting part of it)
3. Needles (the correct type for the type of clothe you’re sewing. The packages state what they’re best for.)
4. Cutting mats (two to three sizes are best, but if one is all you can afford, I recommend the largest one available for general uses)
5. Rotary cutter
6. scissors
7. Clear “rulers”
8. Batting
9. Clothe
10. Yarn (optional, depends if you “quilt” or “tie”)

Please note you do not actually need all of these tools to quilt. I have found from experience that these tools just make it a bit easier. I learned about most of these tools by looking in all the craft isles in Wal-Mart & other stores that sold such things.

Cut your clothe into desired size and assemble your first block the way you wish. If you want a repeating pattern then match all remaining blocks to the first. Add your “boarder”, backing & batting. Then quilt or tie to keep the batting from moving all around. You’re done and enjoy!

I will say that a quilting book is always helpful (or a friend that already quilts). I make it sound so easy, and for the most part is. However, there are bound to be a few mishaps. I still have at least one per quilt to this day. I’m not by any means claiming to be an expert quilter. Just the opposite (a beginner). How ever, I feel many are discouraged due to how complicated it can be presented. This is simply to show it’s not a complicated as one might think. If there are any questions you all have, please email me at fandjstewart@hotmail.com. If I can not answer the question, I most likely know someone who can (or find in a book =) ).

Blessings & happy quilting,

Jessica
